Acne Awareness

Non-Inflammatory Acne

Non-inflammatory acne is characterized by the presence of open or closed comedones.  Comedones are plugs of shed epithelial cells and sebum which block the follicular channel.  Open comedones are those that protrude through to the surface and are commonly known as a blackheads.  Closed comedones do not protrude to the surface and are sometimes called whiteheads.

Hair can play a role in comedo development.  Thinner hairs tend to contribute to the blockage of the follicular channel whereas thicker, more coarse hair may aid in pushing any developing plug to the surface and thus preventing comedo formation.
